The ghostly hyena and off key jackal were at it again. The elephant were roaring ... Literally - it sounds like a massive lion roar - reverberates through the whole valley (valley may be a bit generous; more like a big depression between gentle hills).
Said a sad goodbye to Senyati and Christo & Louw. Ellies, baboons and impala gave us a send off.
Forgot to mention our stupidity on the way up here: one comes across what we thought were "thatch markets" - loads of thatch bundles set vertically. It turns out these are informal settlements at the side of the road. The vertical thatch forms a property demarcation area and acts as a windbreak. The dwelling unit itself could be a tent (often) or ramshackle structure - a lot neater and more pleasing on the eye compared to our lot!
The detour section (135kms) back to Nata has deteriorated rapidly in the last 3 days. Hectic!
Gweta Lodge is a lovely, hospitable place. Had a lovely swim, few drinks and are treating ourselves to their 3 course meal tonight. Chilled cucumber soup (delicious), peri peri chicken (ditto) and apple strudel (ditto).
Ended up having a good few more drinks with the wonderful owners, Terry & Helen and wended our weary way back to camp.
Slept to the accompaniment of barking dogs and cock a doodle doo's!!! Big change from the wildlife noises of the night before!
Off to Island Safari Lodge (east side of Delta) via provision replenishment in Maun today.
A pic of local wildlife:
